Types of yeast infections

Though many people think there is only one kind of yeast infection, it is important to know that there are many types of yeast infections that can affect men and women of all ages. The following are just some of the different types of yeast infections and their specific symptoms.

Candida yeast infections are the most common and most widely known yeast infections. Sometimes called Candida albicans or Candidiasis, this type of yeast infection affects the vaginal area of half of all women. The symptoms of Candida yeast infections include burning and pain in the vaginal area, itching, a white discharge, itching, and redness and swelling of the vulva.

Balanitis is another type of yeast infection and affects men. Oftentimes, it is caused by the same fungus that causes Candida yeast infections. The symptoms of balanitis include patches and blisters on the tip of the penis and around or on the foreskin as well as itching and pain.

Another yeast infection to be aware of is Intertrigo. It is caused by Candida albicans and affects skin folds. The symptoms of Intertrigo include peeling between the fingers, swollen nails, rashes or blisters between the skin’s folds, itching, moistness, burning, and cracking.

Thrush is common and is a form of a yeast infection, though most people do not know it belongs in this category. This kind of yeast infection affects the mouth and throat areas. The main symptoms of oral thrush are white patches in the mouth or in the throat area. These patches are generally painless. Esophageal thrush is most commonly a complication or result of AIDS and its symptoms include painful swallowing and white patches in the throat.

If a person with a yeast infection is treated as soon as possible, the infection can be cured in two weeks time or even in a few times. However, some people may have underlying factors (i.e. genetic predisposition, diabetes, AIDS, etc.) that affect or cause the yeast infection. Thus, it is important to see a doctor as soon as you develop a yeast infection.
