Candida yeast infections, commonly called candidiasis, are caused by a fungi or yeast. There are any different species or types of Candida, but the most common is Candida albicans. This kind of yeast infection affects moist areas of the body, most commonly the vaginal area or underarms. However, any piece of a body can be affected if the fungi grow and inflame the person’s body.

Candida yeast infections can be a symptom or result of chronic diseases like diabetes and AIDS. Thus, if you have a yeast infection, it is important to have it checked out, especially if you are at risk for contracting these diseases. If a person has a disease that affects their immune system, it is important to treat the yeast infection as soon as possible because it can spread and even become life-threatening (i.e. the body can’t battle it if the immune system is not working properly). Additionally, if you are ill and on antibiotics, a yeast infection may appear because your immune system can not combat or fight the fungi.

Yeast infections are easy to spot if you know the signs and symptoms to look for. For vaginal yeast infections, a woman should look for a white, cheese-like discharge and should pay attention to itchy or burning in the crotch-area. Candida yeast infections can also affect people’s mouths and other body parts. Mainly, people should look for inflamed skin, itching, pain, and blisters. If one or many of these symptoms persist for more than a few days, then you may have an issue with Candida albicans and may have a yeast infection.

Candida yeast infections can be treated a number of ways. People may be given medicine by their doctors or they may be asked to change their diet for a period of time. The type of treatment given depends upon the severity of the yeast infection. If yeast infections are treated, more than 90% of people report a full recovery, though some of relapses, especially those with the aforementioned illnesses or those with a genetic predisposition to yeast infections.

Ultimately, it is important to know that yeast infections can affect most parts of a person’s body. Skin yeast infections are common, though many people do not know this because they are most commonly referred to as rashes or inflammations. However, skin yeast infections, sometimes called Intertrigo, are caused when yeast affects skin folds. These infections are caused by a fungus called Candida albicans.

Areas that have skin touching skin are most at risk because the fungus gets trapped and can grow because these areas are generally moist. The areas most at risk for contracting a skin yeast infection are the armpits, groin area, under the breasts, between toes and fingers, and between fat folds. Basically, the skin needs to be touching more skin and the environment needs to be warm and moist for a skin yeast infection to take hold.

You may have a skin yeast infection if the area between skin folds is especially irritated or inflamed. Itchiness is one of the most common symptoms of a skin yeast infection. Additionally, this area may have blisters, be painful, and be discolored.

If you think you have a skin yeast infection, it is important to treat it as soon as possible. If you have a doctor treat it, 90% of people report that the infection was cured in two weeks time and some people even reported the infection was gone in a couple of days.

Skin yeast infections can be caused by many things. If the weather is especially hot and humid, it can result in an overgrowth of the fungus. Additionally, poor hygiene and clothing that is too tight or restrictive can result in the infection. If a person has sensitive skin, they are predisposed to suffering from skin yeast infections. People who use topical steroids are also at risk of having skin yeast infections as are people with diseases or illnesses that lower their immune system.

Don’t think that yeast infections only affect women. In fact, men are almost as likely to suffer from a yeast infection, though it is not always called this. Generally, if a man’s penis is inflamed and itchy and if it is painful to use the bathroom or have sexual relations, then they may have a form of yeast infection called balanitis. Additionally, men are just as likely to suffer from skin and oral yeast infections (i.e. all it takes is a fungus, some skin, and an immune system that can’t handle it).

So what is a male yeast infection? Well, it’s the same as the infections a woman have except a man doesn’t have a vagina. Thus, though any piece or patch of skin can be affected, when it comes to the groin, a man’s penis, foreskin, and the surrounding areas, are affected when a yeast infection takes hold. Additionally, many of the symptoms are the same for men who have yeast infections. For example, urinating and sex become painful, and there is itching, swelling, and burning.

Men who are uncircumcised are at a greater risk of having a yeast infection because the skin folds of the foreskin are hard to keep clean, are moist, and can become a breeding ground for fungus. Also, men who are diabetic or have a disease or illness that lowers the immune system are also more at risk for contracting a male yeast infection. Additionally, if a man is on antibiotics for quite some time, it can result in a yeast infection because the antibiotics are killing bacteria that might normally keep the Candida albicans fungus from growing.

A man can get a yeast infection from sexual relations with a woman who has one or the infection can come about because of hot or humid weather, a lowered immune system, wet or too tight clothing, or bad hygiene, among other reasons. It is important to treat a male yeast infection as soon as possible so that the pain can be dealt with and so the infection doesn’t worsen or spread.

Chronic yeast infections are no fun. After all, who wants to deal with persistent itching, burning, and pain? If you have chronic yeast infections, then you know how annoying they can be for one’s day to day life. However, all is not lost. Though you may have had a yeast infection for months or even for years, there are ways to cope.

First, it’s important to know what might be causing chronic yeast infections. For women, being on a birth control can bring on chronic yeast infections. Other causes include a lowered immune system, being on antibiotics, diabetes, steroid medications, poor hygiene, and a poor diet, among other causes. Additionally, diseases or illnesses that affect a person’s immune system can also cause a chronic yeast infection (i.e. cancer, AIDS, etc.).

It is important to know the symptoms to look for when it comes to a chronic yeast infection. This can help you treat it when it occurs. For women, vaginal itching, burning, and a white discharge can mean a yeast infection is in full swing. For men, if the genital area is inflamed, painful, and itchy, it can mean the same thing. Additionally, skin yeast infections and thrush (i.e. a yeast infection in the mouth) can become chronic too and have similar symptoms.

To treat a chronic yeast infection, you always want to consult with a doctor first. Usually, doctors will try to treat the causal factors before moving into medicine (i.e. doctors don’t want an individual to build up a tolerance to yeast infection medicine, so treating the underlying factors is a way around this). Thus, women may be asked to switch birth controls, and both men and women will be asked to change their hygiene routines and diets. Additionally, a person may be asked to avoid certain kinds of clothing (i.e. wet bathing suits) until the infection is gone. Tests will also be given to see if there is a risk of diabetes or other illnesses that may be undiagnosed and affecting the yeast infections.

Acidophilus may be given to help rid a person of a yeast infection. This is a friendly bacteria that exists in a person’s digestive tract and may help with dealing with an overgrowth of the yeast infection fungus Candida albicans.
